Jack the Giant Slayer
Plot: Based on the children’s fairy-tale, some parts were childish as I expected and wanted. Some people are giving it harsh criticism over the childish aspect but it is a modern twist on a children’s story, so I found it very fitting and enjoyable. The movie was funny, action oriented, and had a good pace. There were no “boring” parts and the story had several unexpected plot twists that kept the film flowing.
Acting: Characters were extremely well developed and took the classic roles of heroes and villains. The casting was done well, and the familiar faces weren’t distracting to the movie. The Princess wasn’t your typical “damsel in distress” and I enjoyed her character as much as the heroes, she wasn’t whiny or helpless and had a lot of personality.
Visual Effects: A lot of people have been saying the CGI on the giants wasn’t done well, but for the type of movie this was the CGI worked very well. The beanstalks were well animated and there were some great moments in the action sequences that displayed some great artistry.
Script: There is quite a bit of rhyming in the beginning and end, but it flows and ties in well with the story telling of the fairy-tale. There was an opening for a second movie at the end, but I personally hope they don’t make another. I would probably watch the sequel but I don’t think there is quite enough loose ends to fabricate another movie. This is a very enjoyable stand alone film and I would recommend you go see it.
